To use Motive for the first time, you have to create an account, get the Motive Commerce Search plugin from your e-commerce platform, and connect the plugin to your shop.
You can do that by following these configuration steps:
- Signing up to Motive
- Logging into Motive
- Entering your company details
- Getting the Motive Commerce Search plugin
- Connecting your shop to Motive
- Selecting your search languages
- Last steps
This process is meant for all Motive users with a PrestaShop or WooCommerce shop, whether or not they already installed the Motive Commerce Search plugin.

Signing up to Motive
To start using Motive, create an account:
- In Name, write your first name.
- In Email, write your business email address.
Note: This email address cannot be already in use.
- In Password, enter a password for your Motive account.
- Click the checkbox to accept our Terms and Conditions and our Privacy Policy.
- Click Create my account.
You are informed that a confirmation email has been sent to the email address you provided. To continue with the setup process, check your inbox and confirm your email address.
Important: The confirmation email expires after 1 hour. If it expires, log into Motive with your business email address and the password you chose when signing up, and click Send again.
Logging into Motive
Once your email address is validated, log into Motive:
- In Email, write your business email address.
- In Password, write the password you chose when signing up.
- Click Log in.
You are automatically redirected to the next step of the process.
Entering your company details
Once you log in, enter your company details:
- In Company name, write the name of your business.
- In Business type, select an option to indicate what your business is about.
- Click Configure Motive.
You are automatically redirected to the next step of the process.
Getting the Motive Commerce Search plugin
To start configuring Motive, get the Motive Commerce Search plugin.
Important: If you have already downloaded the plugin from the Wordpress Control Panel or from the PrestaShop Module Catalog and installed it before signing up to Motive, select your e-commerce platform and go to the next step of the process.
- Select the required e-commerce platform to download the plugin:
- For PrestaShop, click Get the module. You’re redirected to PrestaShop, where you can download the plugin (module in PrestaShop).
- For WooCommerce, click Download plugin. A ZIP file is downloaded automatically; do not unzip it.
- Install the plugin in your e-commerce platform.
- Back to the Motive setup, click Go to next step.
You are automatically redirected to the next step of the process.
Getting help from your team
If you'd rather have a consultant or a member of your team configure your Motive account, click Get help from your team and send an invite to the person you want to configure it. Once they accept your invite, they will be able to access your account and continue configuring it.
Connecting your shop to Motive
To connect your shop to Motive, use the security token from the Motive Commerce Search module or plugin page in your e-commerce platform.
Important: Ensure you whitelist our IP addresses to prevent connection issues.
- In Name of your site, write the name of your shop.
- In Security token, enter the Motive token from your e-commerce platform.
- In URL of your site, write the URL of your shop.
Note: If credentials are required, enter the URL in the following format:
https://user:password@yourdomain.com
- Click Connect Motive.
You are automatically redirected to the next step of the process.
Selecting your search languages
Select for which languages you want to make Motive available:
- Use the Enable toggle to enable Motive for the required languages.
Note: You can make Motive available for all the languages of your shop.
- Use the Default column to select the language that will appear by default when configuring any Motive features.
- Click Start using Motive.
You are automatically redirected to a page where you can see how your catalogue is synchronised with Motive. This process takes a few minutes.
Note: Synchronisation time depends on the size of your catalogue, the processing and download speed of your web server, and whether other indexing processes are happening during synchronisation.
Once your catalogue is synchronised, you are automatically redirected to the Motive Playboard.
Last steps
When you have configured Motive and been redirected to the Playboard, you land on the Analytics page. There you see a pop-over window with the following actions to finish the setup:
Customising the visuals
Edit and fully customise the appearance of the Motive search layer for it to match the rest of your shop. See our page on managing visual customisation to learn how.
Or, if you prefer, our team can take care of this part of the process so you don't have to worry about a thing.
Note: You can edit the visual aspects of the search layer at any time after the initial setup.
Enabling the search interface
Lastly, activate the Motive search layer in your shop.
Important: To ensure Motive works correctly, disable your former search layer.
Once the search layer is enabled, Motive Commerce Search is up and running. You can check it by reloading your site. If something is wrong, check the Motive status page and contact us at support@motive.co if necessary.
Note: Ensure that you check it in a device running a supported operating system.
